CLIFF FABRI

 MANAGEMENT MATERIAL

BY GORD HUNTER

Most people could not distinguish Cliff Fabri from any other coffee-shop patron. You can normally find him at Coffee and Company on the corner of Princess and King streets, relaxing in the big armchair he calls his “office.” He could be mistaken for an office employee or an aspiring author, but it’s hard to imagine anyone would guess his real vocation. This unassuming man with headphones dangling from his ears is actually a world-renowned music impresario who mentors and manages the aspirations of talented musicians.

Born in Montreal, Fabri’s first post-graduate job after attending University was promoting and booking acts for The Penguin Club, a live music venue in Ottawa. It was then that Fabri had a vision for his future. He and his business partner, Mark Monahan (who would go on to to create and run Ottawa’s mega music festival- RBC Bluesfest),

had booked Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bo Diddley for 2 shows at the Penguin Club. Fabri recalls taking the performer to the airport the next morning. “It was a really early flight and my son was less than a year old so I had him with me,” says Fabri. “At one point, I look in the rearview mirror and there’s Bo Diddley in the backseat of my car singing ‘I’m a Man’ to my son. That was the moment I became hooked on the music business.”Not long after, Fabri tried his hand at music management and spent a year in a van touring the East Coast of the United States with a band called September Child.

Under his direction, the band achieved moderate success and a US Recording offer, but Fabri hadn’t yet settled on a place to call home.

Since his wife’s family still lived in Sydenham and knowing she would need help with their young son while Fabri was on the road, they decided on Kingston. “At that point I didn’t know much about Kingston,” he recalls. “I knew it was a truck stop between Montreal and Toronto, and I knew that it was home to Queen’s University, but from the moment we moved here,

CLIFF FABRI- THOM PANUNZIO- ANITA CAMARATA-(Popmania)

(Los Angeles Nov 2014 -
THOM PANUNZIO is a veteran music man recognized for his work on numerous
Grammy award-winning albums, and has been the recipient of over fifty gold and platinum records.
ANITA CAMARATA - Is a former MGM Executive in charge of Song Placements in Major Motion Pictures and Television. Anita has had a long and storied career in the music business , was an associate at Danny Goldberg's GOLD MOUNTAIN,  President and co-founder JERSEY RECORDS with Danny Devito. Now owner and Executive at LA Based Popmania (www.popmania.com).

"I absolutely fell in love with the city.” That was in 1997 and Fabri was still trucking back and forth between Boston, New York and Philadelphia, spending hours on the road with
the band and hoping for that elusive big break. “[Two years later], I was working in New York and I got a call from my old university buddy Tom Schreider [owner of White Mountain Ice Cream]. Tom said he’d read an article about this young girl who was doing a show in Kingston, and he wondered when I was home again.”
Cliff Fabri and Tim James - Rock Mafia - Los Angeles 2014
(Tim James is an American Songwriter and Record Producer. James is the co-founder of Rock Mafia James co-collaborates with production partner Antonina Armato, between the three founding members of the Rock Mafia organization, they have collectively sold over 100 million albums worldwide).

So Fabri was seated in the audience of Chapters bookstore on Princess Street to hear a very young Avril Lavigne singing in front of 10 people.
Fabri took Lavigne on as a client and less than two years later her debut record “Let’s Go” was certified four times platinum. Fabri established 333 Music, a company to represent and develop artists like Lavigne and Samantha Moore.

Fabri found a 13-year-old Moore singing at the Kingston Fall Fair nine years ago. With Fabri's assistance, she signed a million dollar record deal, and then a million dollar publishing deal, all within a year of meeting Fabri. She spent 7 years on Geffen Records under the tutelage of Jimmy Iovine.
Internationally renowned artists have since recorded her songs and she remains a star in the Publishing world.Throughout his rise within the ranks of music management and artist development, Fabri has stayed in touch with his former business partner Mark Monahan.

Cliff has taken on the role of music industry liaison for the Ottawa Festivals, Fabri’s connections to people like Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records, and co-owner of 'beats by dr. dre',
are expected to broaden awareness of the festival and introduce opportunities such as high-definition broadcasts to the lucrative American television market. With these kinds of connections and an established track record of international success, the question becomes, why has he never taken up residence in Manhattan or Hollywood? “I’ve had numerous opportunities to live in New York or LA, but why would I want to leave my home".

SAMANTHA MOORE'S Publishing :

Samantha Moore was signed to a Million Dollar Record Deal with Jimmy Iovine at age 14. The 7 year ride was a roller coaster of ups and downs, and with Napster etc happening, it was a bad time to get a new record released through a Major Label. The work that was created was over 135 co-writes with some of the top writer-producers in the music business.

The success we had was based on survival and creating new ways for Samantha Moore to flourish. Her Publishing Deal at the time was groundbreaking to the degree that she still didn't have a release date from her Label when the deal was completed. Some of the song placements and Artist's that recorded and released Samantha Moore songs.

Featured Artist , Samantha Moore. Everything about The Hills is better than Laguna Beach, the show that spawned it -- its mix of real-life soap opera drama and fashion world politics is more focused and engaging than Laguna's muddled high school high jinks ever were, and Lauren, Heidi, Whitney, and Audrina's friendships seem more genuine, despite the occasional (or frequent) falling out. This goes for the show's soundtrack, too: The Hills' mix of drama-queen ballads (Pink's "Long Way to Happy," Lindsay Lohan's "A Beautiful Life," Samantha Moore's "Replace You"), girl-power pop (Superchick's "One Girl Revolution" and show's theme, Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten").

The Legend Continues -
“Why would I want to own a studio,” Walt Disney responded to the suggestion of his company’s director of recording Tutti Camarata. “I’d rather be a client.” Was this gentle Walt’s way of asking his music man to seek employment elsewhere, or a subtle nudge to encourage entrepreneurship? Tutti presumed the latter, and so it began. It was a perfect little brick structure, once an automotive repair garage. The walls, ceiling, and floor all slanted toward one corner of the cavern where the excess automobile fluids trickled into a drain. Non-parallel surfaces are ideal for acoustic control—and ideal for a studio! Tutti kicked the tires a few times and declared “I’ll take it!” Little did he know that the small step he took in 1958 on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood would soon be joined by the stampede of giants.

OTTAWA RBC BLUESFEST - WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUTOttawa Bluesfest, what’s it all about?
Ottawa Bluesfest is one of Canada’s largest and longest running festivals, starting its life in 1994, the festival is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year and will soon open its doors to over 300,000 people across 12 days……..now that’s huge!

Check out the video re-cap from last year’s festival:

The uniqueness of Ottawa Bluesfest can be attributed to the fact that it’s run as a not for profit festival but also as a community getting together to create a fantastic event centered around music.  Over 4,000 volunteers help to make Ottawa Bluesfest a success every year and festival founder Mark Monahan told us recently that without them the festival would just not happen, and we believe him!

Ottawa Bluesfest arena panorama view
Another reason that Bluesfest is unique can be attributed to the support the festival gives to local bands, that now make up a quarter of the line up and fill slots normally reserved for bigger, more well known bands.   This is just one way that the festival gives back to the community, but it’s much more than just a ‘10 day commitment’, Bluesfest operates out of a large converted church (that they own and converted) that not only houses their offices but also the Bluesfest School of Music & Festival House, a local incubator for local festivals.  Other initiatives Bluesfest are involved with include the long-running Blues in the Schools program, to the youth-oriented Be in the Band, to the She's the One national talent search, shows that this is truly an organization firmly entrenched within the community.

Ottawa Bluesfest Bell Stage at night
As an established festival on the North American circuit Bluesfest attracts some of the biggest names in music from AWOLNATION to ZEDD, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and many more but still manages to keep the ‘community’ vibe, largely because Ottawa Bluesfest is an urban festival and takes place within the city unlike many of today’s large ‘destination’ festivals that take place in fields or stadiums.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from the official Bluesfest website

Bringing MuchMoreMusic to RBC bluesfest for 3yrs running:

Mark Monahan - Creator and Executive Director of the

RBC Ottawa Bluesfest and current Executive Director of
Ottawa FolkFest.
(Little known fact, Mark Monahan was my partner and first business mgr of 'Avril Lavigne').

As the brainchild behind Ottawa’s Bluesfest, which is about to enter its 20th season, Mark has always been interested in music.

He took lessons in his youth and dreamed of being in a band, but when he realized that his artistic abilities were not going to make him a living he enrolled in mass communications at Carleton University and concentrated on business classes. After graduating, he got into the restaurant and nightclub industry.
Long-standing Ottawans will remember the Penguin on Elgin Street as a venue for live music. Mark owned the lounge and got his start booking and promoting bands there. It was in 1994 that he had the idea of bringing a music festival to Ottawa. He thought that creating a popular festival would have a high potential of success, and he was right!
With a $16,000 budget, the first Bluesfest began as a fundraiser and has grown into the most popular music festival in the capital. Today, it has a budget of $12 million, and Bluesfest continues to function as a charitable organization with the aim of bringing a quality festival to the community. While the location has changed and the list of performers has grown to include artists of many genres, the concept is consistent. Mark is committed to keeping the festival fresh and unique with a goal to promote local talent in addition to bringing in the big names.

The opportunity to book A-list bands is greater here in the capital than in a bigger city where larger venues and multiple festivals compete for their performances. Also, as Ottawa can often get missed on the concert tour, it offers Bluesfest the chance to put together an impressive line-up of A-listers. However, Mark’s commitment to developing and keeping local talent in Ottawa is still a priority.
“It is important for creative people to have an outlet in this city,” says the community minded entrepreneur. “We work hard to do this. And we are, in effect, creating an underground community for artists as we strive to create meaningful opportunities for locals as well.”
ARCADE FIRE

The dedication that Bluesfest shows to the music industry in Ottawa is remarkable. With a seven-member board run as a not-for-profit organization, the group has started a community program called “Be In A Band” which is named for all those kids who have ever wanted to be in one – including a teenaged Mark Monahan.
“We put them in a band, give them equipment and mentor them with local artists,” he says. “We think of it as giving that missing link to kids who want to be in band – they encounter the same things as a regular band, the same challenges.”
The father of four girls, aged eight to 15, he recognizes the importance of keeping up on music trends by staying connected to youth. His own children inspire his interests and he shares his passions with them. Recently, he travelled to the Coachella Festival in California with his 15-year-old daughter, just one of the things he does throughout the year to stay on top of what others are doing and to keep Bluesfest current.
LUPE FIASCO

Waking up one day to find out that Ottawa is no longer interested in Bluesfest is perhaps his greatest fear! Research has shown that at least 50 percent of Ottawans have attended the festival. With the determination to book big name acts each year, and working year-round to bring the best of new and older music to the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest, Mark Monahan likely won’t disappoint. For those who were hoping for Eric Clapton or Neil Young this year, don’t despair! The well-connected, passionate man plans on bringing them in soon – maybe even next year. The wait will just serve to heighten our excitement and anticipation for future editions of Bluesfest. Visit www.ottawaathome.ca for slide show of Bluesfest 2011 in mid July.

Ottawa’s Bluesfest is going back to school — literally. The Bluesfest School of Music and Art will open at the end of April, offering classes in visual arts, guitar and harmonica, filmmaking and animation, even lessons on how to be a DJ. The not-for-profit project will be run in conjunction with the Dovercourt Community Association.

  • OTTAWA FOLKFEST 2014 will be part folk, part story, part craft beer garden and part East Coast kitchen party.

2) Samantha Moore

Samantha Moore grew up in Colborne, Ontario, Canada. She attended East Northumberland Secondary School.  She began performing in summer singing competitions around eastern Ontario and was 'discovered' in 2002 at age thirteen by Cliff Fabri (RomanLine Ent. /Avril Lavigne), while competing in the Kingston, Ontario Fall Fair Talent Contest. Six months after meeting Fabri she signed a one million dollar recording contract with Geffen Records and moved to Los Angeles to write and record music.

Although not a household name, you have heard Samantha Moore songs recorded by other Artist's, which include Miley Cyrus. She also had many of her songs in Movie and Television Soundtracks.
The beginning - 13 yr old Samantha Moore

The NY Times just did a big story on the band, which you can read at this link. Look for Iovine to put big bucks behind this project. He is determined to create his ownDisney-like franchise!

    JESSICA TYLER:

Upon returning from Los Angeles an old Lacrosse buddy introduced me to Jessica Tyler. Jessica had been doing a few commercials and was very new to the entertainment industry.

She was a dynamic personality and had a great (life) attitude.

Our association was a whirlwind of activity that is highlighted below.

What came of it was a great opportunity to be a cast member of the hit tv series Degrassi. Jessica's character was incorporated with a music background and Jessica became the first cast member to co-write and perform her own songs on the show.

16-year old singer/songwriter Jessica Tyler, managed by

Cliff Fabri (Avril Lavigne, Samantha Moore), has

been meeting with virtually every Major Label

and Publishing Company in the US.

JessicaTyler over the course of 18 months.

After all of our travels we were able to secure Jessica a much

coveted role on the TEEN DRAMA DEGRASSI.

Jessica was the first cast member to perform her own written

songs on the show through her character Jenna Middleton.

Being the first International band to appear on FARMCLUB.COM is a coup for London, Ontario, band BOMB 32. They will be appearing on a forthcoming program along with KID ROCK, EMINEM and others. Jimmy & Doug's FARMCLUB.COM, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, is a television series from the U.S. that is also seen in Canada on MUCHMUSIC on Tuesdays at 9pm and midnight.

BOMB 32 manager Cliff Fabri, a former Ottawan, forwarded the band's recording to his U.S.-based partner who got it to FARMCLUB.COM and after seeing the band perform in Toronto they were booked for the prestigious slot alongside KID ROCK and EMINEM. Some of the indie bands that have appeared on the show have since been signed, among them SEV, DYNAMITE HACK, HEADBOARD and DOG FASHION DISCO. Not bad company for these four former University buddies!

So far they've showcased at the NXNE FESTIVAL, CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK and were recently in Ottawa at FRESHFEST. They're getting regular airplay on Toronto's CFNY (The Edge 102.1) and Ottawa's XFM and, no doubt, when FARMCLUB.COM airs their performance, things will only go skyward from there.

bomb32 changed name to 'Headstrong'  (RCA Records)
Negotiations were underway in July after David Bendeth, the label's senior vice-president of A&R, saw the mercurial rap-rock combo perform a handful of songs in a space so small, hot and cramped that even the few spectators had sweat beads dripping from their upper lip.

Bomb32 formed six years ago, while at university in London, Ontario, but it wasn't until returning home to Toronto and hooking up with manager Cliff Fabri ( Jenifer McLaren - Nettwerk Records , Avril Lavigne - Arista Records) in December 1999 that things started happening. A parade of A&R reps and music publishers saw the band showcase either in rehearsal or at local gigs.

Strangely, even when it was revealed in the press that this little-known Toronto rock band had been selected to perform on the television component to online record company Jimmy And Doug's farmclub.com.

The band was eventually flown to Universal Studios in Burbank, CA, to perform "All Of The Above". Their performance that night coincided with DR. DRE and EMINEM who were slotted in the same episode.

A camera crew then came up to Toronto to shoot the interview portion. Bomb32's appearance on the show marked the first by an unsigned international act.

       Jennifer McLaren

NETTWERK RECORDS  Jennifer McLaren's long wait for Night Light to shine is just about over. Yesterday, McLaren had the first chance to look at her solo album, Night Light, when it arrived via courier at The Free Press newsroom. The packaging was so new, the London singer-songwriter-pianist wasn't sure till she held up the Nettwerk-label CD whether it would be titled Night Light or Nightlight.
McLaren was signed by Cliff Fabri .
Early in her career, Fabri had her playing all over North America and used his connections with Nettwerk Records to land her a recording and publishing deal. She was Fabri's first signing in the music business and soon after bomb32 and Avril Lavigne were added to his roster. All went on to sign Major US Recording Contracts.

Mark Jowett, the guy who signed superstar Sarah McLachlan to Nettwerk, is involved. Jowett produced Night Light. Jowett also signed McLaren to Nettwerk and is McLaren's A and R (artist and repertoire) representative. Jowett is also vice-president of A and R international and VP of publishing at Nettwerk.

Jowett's personal interest in the recording was backed by Nettwerk's promotion of McLaren as its "mystery artist." The label invited remixers and DJs to remix one or more of songs by the "mystery artist." Vocal and instrumental parts could be found at www.nightlightmusic.com and Nettwerk says the remixing buzz was big.
Then it was off to B.C. for big changes in music and life. She recorded with techno-oriented Delerium on the band's Poem album. A McLaren-voiced track, Fallen Icons, made it to the TV show Roswell. The Delerium connection continued with McLaren collaborating with Delerium's keyboardist-composer Bill Leeb on his industrial music project, Front Line Assembly. She sings on the Assembly single Providence. Delerium programming wizard Chris Peterson became her boyfriend. The two recently broke up.Now, McLaren is based once more in her home town, waiting to hit the road with her own music. "The name reflected a duality -- lyrically and musically -- between the darker and lighter moments of the record," she says of Night Light. "To me, it also evokes a sense of magic and finding a glimmer of hope in times of darkness."

To put it another way, Night Light's brilliance is a mystery no more.

Miss Emily, is in part the brainchild of Cliff Fabri,
who is mostly known for his work with

Napanee megastar Avril Lavigne. Fabri met Emily Fennell after
he saw her play at a small gig on Wolfe Island. Fabri states, " I thought Emily was this incredible talent that was under utilized. Coming up with the name 'Miss Emily', I thought it was an appropriate monicker for this force of music that she presented. She's amazing !"

Fennell says Fabri opened doors for her that previously had remained firmly closed.
"I am the artist, but 50% of what I'm doing now is because of Cliff," she says."I go about my life, but the business is 24 hours a day non-stop and that's what Cliff does. "It grew legs pretty quickly and it was really easy for me to
write according to that kind of vibe. It was very natural for me."
I get an e-mail from Gene Simmons and it's Sunday night at 1:30 a.m."

There is an artist I think you should know about:
Miss Emily. I saw her perform at the Cisco Ottawa
Bluesfest about a month ago and I played a festival
gig with her in Toronto this past weekend
(think Janis Joplin meets Alicia Keys)..
Has played a few shows with The Tragically Hip
who are big fans, and I have a feeling about her like I haven't had about a new artist in a long

Fennell debuted her solo act to a sold-out crowd at Kingston's
      Grand Theatre in December.

"It was really cool because obviously I've never had my own concert
in a concert hall of that size," she said.

"Then on January 3, I get a message from the Universal rep that Gene wanted to talk to me," says Fennell. "He told me he was coming to Toronto later in the month and would I play a showcase for him."
Fennell told Simmons that as Miss Emily, she played solo or with veteran keyboardist Chris Brown. The KISS leader asked her to do a couple of things for the showcase.
      Miss Emily - Gene Simmons
"He asked me to have a full band and that it have 25-year-old soul players in it," she says.
The showcase would be on Jan. 27 in Toronto, and two days before, the Universal rep asked Fennell if she wanted to meet Simmons so she wouldn't be as nervous on the day of the show. It was to be at the venerable Horseshoe Tavern, where Simmons was checking out another act. Miss Emily discovered only when she arrived that she was part of a taping for Simmons' TV reality show Gene Simmons Family Jewels.
