CLIFF FABRI
MANAGEMENT MATERIAL
BY GORD HUNTER
Most people could not distinguish Cliff Fabri from any other coffee-shop patron. You can normally find him at Coffee and Company on the corner of Princess and King streets, relaxing in the big armchair he calls his “office.” He could be mistaken for an office employee or an aspiring author, but it’s hard to imagine anyone would guess his real vocation. This unassuming man with headphones dangling from his ears is actually a world-renowned music impresario who mentors and manages the aspirations of talented musicians.
Born in Montreal, Fabri’s first post-graduate job after attending University was promoting and booking acts for The Penguin Club, a live music venue in Ottawa. It was then that Fabri had a vision for his future. He and his business partner, Mark Monahan (who would go on to to create and run Ottawa’s mega music festival- RBC Bluesfest),

had booked Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bo Diddley for 2 shows at the Penguin Club. Fabri recalls taking the performer to the airport the next morning. “It was a really early flight and my son was less than a year old so I had him with me,” says Fabri. “At one point, I look in the rearview mirror and there’s Bo Diddley in the backseat of my car singing ‘I’m a Man’ to my son. That was the moment I became hooked on the music business.”Not long after, Fabri tried his hand at music management and spent a year in a van touring the East Coast of the United States with a band called September Child.
Under his direction, the band achieved moderate success and a US Recording offer, but Fabri hadn’t yet settled on a place to call home.

Since his wife’s family still lived in Sydenham and knowing she would need help with their young son while Fabri was on the road, they decided on Kingston. “At that point I didn’t know much about Kingston,” he recalls. “I knew it was a truck stop between Montreal and Toronto, and I knew that it was home to Queen’s University, but from the moment we moved here,

"I absolutely fell in love with the city.” That was in 1997 and Fabri was still trucking back and forth between Boston, New York and Philadelphia, spending hours on the road with
the band and hoping for that elusive big break. “[Two years later], I was working in New York and I got a call from my old university buddy Tom Schreider [owner of White Mountain Ice Cream]. Tom said he’d read an article about this young girl who was doing a show in Kingston, and he wondered when I was home again.”

Fabri took Lavigne on as a client and less than two years later her debut record “Let’s Go” was certified four times platinum. Fabri established 333 Music, a company to represent and develop artists like Lavigne and Samantha Moore.

Fabri found a 13-year-old Moore singing at the Kingston Fall Fair nine years ago. With Fabri's assistance, she signed a million dollar record deal, and then a million dollar publishing deal, all within a year of meeting Fabri. She spent 7 years on Geffen Records under the tutelage of Jimmy Iovine.

With these kinds of connections and an established track record of international success, the question becomes, why has he never taken up residence in Manhattan or Hollywood? “I’ve had numerous opportunities to live in New York or LA, but why would I want to leave my home".

Hills Soundtrack CD (2007)
Featured Artist , Samantha Moore. Everything about The Hills is better than Laguna Beach, the show that spawned it -- its mix of real-life soap opera drama and fashion world politics is more focused and engaging than Laguna's muddled high school high jinks ever were, and Lauren, Heidi, Whitney, and Audrina's friendships seem more genuine, despite the occasional (or frequent) falling out. This goes for the show's soundtrack, too: The Hills' mix of drama-queen ballads (Pink's "Long Way to Happy," Lindsay Lohan's "A Beautiful Life," Samantha Moore's "Replace You"), girl-power pop (Superchick's "One Girl Revolution" and show's theme, Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten").

“Why would I want to own a studio,” Walt Disney responded to the suggestion of his company’s director of recording Tutti Camarata. “I’d rather be a client.” Was this gentle Walt’s way of asking his music man to seek employment elsewhere, or a subtle nudge to encourage entrepreneurship? Tutti presumed the latter, and so it began. It was a perfect little brick structure, once an automotive repair garage. The walls, ceiling, and floor all slanted toward one corner of the cavern where the excess automobile fluids trickled into a drain. Non-parallel surfaces are ideal for acoustic control—and ideal for a studio! Tutti kicked the tires a few times and declared “I’ll take it!” Little did he know that the small step he took in 1958 on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood would soon be joined by the stampede of giants.

Ottawa Bluesfest is one of Canada’s largest and longest running festivals, starting its life in 1994, the festival is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year and will soon open its doors to over 300,000 people across 12 days……..now that’s huge!
Check out the video re-cap from last year’s festival:
Check out the video re-cap from last year’s festival:
The uniqueness of Ottawa Bluesfest can be attributed to the fact that it’s run as a not for profit festival but also as a community getting together to create a fantastic event centered around music. Over 4,000 volunteers help to make Ottawa Bluesfest a success every year and festival founder Mark Monahan told us recently that without them the festival would just not happen, and we believe him!

Another reason that Bluesfest is unique can be attributed to the support the festival gives to local bands, that now make up a quarter of the line up and fill slots normally reserved for bigger, more well known bands. This is just one way that the festival gives back to the community, but it’s much more than just a ‘10 day commitment’, Bluesfest operates out of a large converted church (that they own and converted) that not only houses their offices but also the Bluesfest School of Music & Festival House, a local incubator for local festivals. Other initiatives Bluesfest are involved with include the long-running Blues in the Schools program, to the youth-oriented Be in the Band, to the She's the One national talent search, shows that this is truly an organization firmly entrenched within the community.

As an established festival on the North American circuit Bluesfest attracts some of the biggest names in music from AWOLNATION to ZEDD, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and many more but still manages to keep the ‘community’ vibe, largely because Ottawa Bluesfest is an urban festival and takes place within the city unlike many of today’s large ‘destination’ festivals that take place in fields or stadiums.

Bringing MuchMoreMusic to RBC bluesfest for 3yrs running:
Mark Monahan - Creator and Executive Director of the
RBC Ottawa Bluesfest and current Executive Director of
Ottawa FolkFest.
(Little known fact, Mark Monahan was my partner and first business mgr of 'Avril Lavigne').
He took lessons in his youth and dreamed of being in a band, but when he realized that his artistic abilities were not going to make him a living he enrolled in mass communications at Carleton University and concentrated on business classes. After graduating, he got into the restaurant and nightclub industry.
Long-standing Ottawans will remember the Penguin on Elgin Street as a venue for live music. Mark owned the lounge and got his start booking and promoting bands there. It was in 1994 that he had the idea of bringing a music festival to Ottawa. He thought that creating a popular festival would have a high potential of success, and he was right!
With a $16,000 budget, the first Bluesfest began as a fundraiser and has grown into the most popular music festival in the capital. Today, it has a budget of $12 million, and Bluesfest continues to function as a charitable organization with the aim of bringing a quality festival to the community. While the location has changed and the list of performers has grown to include artists of many genres, the concept is consistent. Mark is committed to keeping the festival fresh and unique with a goal to promote local talent in addition to bringing in the big names.
“It is important for creative people to have an outlet in this city,” says the community minded entrepreneur. “We work hard to do this. And we are, in effect, creating an underground community for artists as we strive to create meaningful opportunities for locals as well.”
ARCADE FIRE |
The dedication that Bluesfest shows to the music industry in Ottawa is remarkable. With a seven-member board run as a not-for-profit organization, the group has started a community program called “Be In A Band” which is named for all those kids who have ever wanted to be in one – including a teenaged Mark Monahan.
“We put them in a band, give them equipment and mentor them with local artists,” he says. “We think of it as giving that missing link to kids who want to be in band – they encounter the same things as a regular band, the same challenges.”
The father of four girls, aged eight to 15, he recognizes the importance of keeping up on music trends by staying connected to youth. His own children inspire his interests and he shares his passions with them. Recently, he travelled to the Coachella Festival in California with his 15-year-old daughter, just one of the things he does throughout the year to stay on top of what others are doing and to keep Bluesfest current.
LUPE FIASCO |
Waking up one day to find out that Ottawa is no longer interested in Bluesfest is perhaps his greatest fear! Research has shown that at least 50 percent of Ottawans have attended the festival. With the determination to book big name acts each year, and working year-round to bring the best of new and older music to the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest, Mark Monahan likely won’t disappoint. For those who were hoping for Eric Clapton or Neil Young this year, don’t despair! The well-connected, passionate man plans on bringing them in soon – maybe even next year. The wait will just serve to heighten our excitement and anticipation for future editions of Bluesfest. Visit www.ottawaathome.ca for slide show of Bluesfest 2011 in mid July.

2) Samantha Moore
Samantha Moore grew up in Colborne, Ontario, Canada. She attended East Northumberland Secondary School. She began performing in summer singing competitions around eastern Ontario and was 'discovered' in 2002 at age thirteen by Cliff Fabri (RomanLine Ent. /Avril Lavigne), while competing in the Kingston, Ontario Fall Fair Talent Contest. Six months after meeting Fabri she signed a one million dollar recording contract with Geffen Records and moved to Los Angeles to write and record music.
Although not a household name, you have heard Samantha Moore songs recorded by other Artist's, which include Miley Cyrus. She also had many of her songs in Movie and Television Soundtracks.

We first told you about the Clique Girlz back in May 2008, after receiving a promo CD from the label. Several of the group’s songs, including “The Difference” and “Then I Woke Up”, were penned by Crazed Hits favorite Samantha Moore. The NY Times just did a big story on the band, which you can read at this link. Look for Iovine to put big bucks behind this project. He is determined to create his ownDisney-like franchise!
JESSICA TYLER:
Upon returning from Los Angeles an old Lacrosse buddy introduced me to Jessica Tyler. Jessica had been doing a few commercials and was very new to the entertainment industry.
She was a dynamic personality and had a great (life) attitude.
Our association was a whirlwind of activity that is highlighted below.
What came of it was a great opportunity to be a cast member of the hit tv series Degrassi. Jessica's character was incorporated with a music background and Jessica became the first cast member to co-write and perform her own songs on the show.
Tyler over the course of 18 months.
After all of our travels we were able to secure Jessica a much
coveted role on the TEEN DRAMA DEGRASSI.
Jessica was the first cast member to perform her own written
songs on the show through her character Jenna Middleton.
